Health Tips for Older Adults

By Jennifer McGregor

As we age, our bodies change quite a bit. Getting enough of the proper nutrients throughout the day is an important part of staying healthy and enjoying a long life. Saving money is also important, especially when you’re living on a fixed income. With that in mind, here are some tips to help seniors get enough nutrients throughout the day while adhering to a budget.

Enroll in a Wellness Program

Many insurance companies offer wellness programs that help seniors establish a healthy nutritional plan. If you are currently enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, such as UnitedHealthcare’s Medicare Advantage plan, you may be entitled to wellness and fitness programs at little or no cost to you. Things like gym memberships, registered dieticians, and savings on vitamins could be right at your fingertips. If you aren’t already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, look for one that offers these wellness and fitness plans for seniors.

Take Up Cooking as a Hobby

Cooking for a hobby is a great way for seniors to ensure they are getting a diverse array of nutrients. Instead of making the same meal every week or relying on quick and frozen meals, make each meal something special. Widen your palate by trying new things. Make sure to only choose recipes with good foods, although a tasty dessert every once in a while will not hurt. If you struggle to come up with different ideas, there are several recipe websites that can provide special dishes based on the ingredients you already have. Cooking at home versus eating out is not only healthier, but it can also save you hundreds of dollars each month.

Eat a Well-Balanced Diet

A balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals keeps your body mass index low, helps lower blood pressure, and cholesterol, and reduces the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. A healthy diet should include plenty of lean meats, fruits and vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy products, and drinks with limited amounts of sugar.

Get the Most Out of Your Vitamins

If your body doesn’t absorb nutrients the way it once did, you may have to take supplements in the form of a pill or injection. Iron, vitamin C, and vitamin D are three of the most important nutrients that some seniors lack. Taking these together, along with a meal that includes healthy fats, can help the body absorb them better. To save money, purchase a vitamin C tablet that also contains vitamin D. Vitamin B12 is another nutrient that some seniors lack. Most doctor’s offices offer vitamin B12 as an injection that may be covered by your insurance.

Getting enough nutrients doesn’t have to cost a fortune. By doing the proper research and taking advantage of the things already within your reach, you can save money and be healthy at the same time. Not only does getting enough nutrients add years to your life, but it can also add life to your years. With good health comes great happiness.
